Futsal is the is the international form of indoor soccer approved by FIFA. It is played in all continents of the world by over 100 countries with 12 million players.
Futsal, also referred to as "five-a-side," is played on a basketball court, although it can be played on a variety of surfaces. Futsal is played with a special, small and low-bounce ball.
The term FUTSAL is the international term used for the game. It is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "soccer", FUTbol or FUTebol, and the French or Spanish word for "indoor", SALon or SALa.
SLPSA offers a winter Futsal program as a fun opportunity for players to develop skills and for off-season training and conditioning.
Futsal skills transfer well to soccer as it demands quick reflexes, fast thinking and pin point passing. The game is economical, simple and fun to play. Children learn faster as they enjoy the game and spend a lot of time with the ball. As the balls have less bounce they tend to stay in play longer and promote close ball control.
Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico and Socrates grew up playing the game and credit Futsal with developing their skills.
SLPSA partners with Joy of the People, founded by Ted Kroeten, for the Futsal program. Ted is Architect of some of the most innovative and successful youth training programs. He is an "A" licensed coach with 25 years coaching experience including Head Coach of Breck Girls team. Additionally, he was an original Thunder player and National Champion in 1991.
